While I'm not a big Spike fan, particularly after the season 5 "I have a soul and talk like a prophetic madman" storyline, I really do love Angel, both the character and the show. Among other things, the show itself conveys a different tone than Buffy did. Much darker, and a better looking lead.
And yes, avoiding the fan base can be a challenge at times. I have a weird tendancy to get involved in things with nutso fans, but I try to avoid becoming one of them. (I'mnot making much sense here). Basically, it's the nice way of saying "I like things like Star Trek, Buffy, and LARP, but I really try to avoid the conventions etc, where I'm likely to be a hypocrite and reject people based solely on the level of their immersion)
