But if I see Keith Olberman's commentary posted one more time today, I'm going to shove my foot up someone's ass.

I'll also refer you to [livejournal.com profile] nihilistic_kid's post on the subject.

While I realize it's nice for a MSNBC broadcaster to come out for gay marriage, he, like protesters on Saturday, will be largely ignored by the mainstream and condemned by the social conservatives.

And since someone on my friends list felt free to condemn anyone who won't be attending a protest on Saturday...

I have to work. Getting bent out of shape about something that happened in California doesn't pay the bills, doesn't put food on the table, and sure as hell doesn't get me any closer to being involved with someone who I'd actually be tempted to use the right Prop 8 took away.

While I agree that I think California was wrong in voting in Prop 8, I think that religious institutions should not have been pouring money into the campaign to pass it, this is also an issue CA is going to have to work out with itself. Particularly considering how many states currently have Amendments banning same-sex marriage amd the federal DOMA law. If you want to protest something, try those. They affect us much more than an injustice in CA.

Also, as has been pointed out previously, CA still has domestic partnerships, which while not enough, are still a damn sight better than what most of us mid-westerners qualify for.

Plus, as far as I'm concerned, it's not the governments business...or any other organizations business, as to what consenting adults do in THEIR private lives!

Unfortunatly, those who like pussy and dick going together can get religious sanctification and government tax breaks etc.

Believe it or not...THAT is supposed to be against the law. Church and State are supposed to be separated...AND where are the privacy laws? Definitely not being enforced that's for sure.

I realize this. I also just happen to think people would be better off protesting their own state's discrimination or protesting DOMA. Since even if CA does give back legal recognition, no one else has to recognize it.

There are a few that have, but I can't see someone moving from MA to OH just to start a lawsuit.

I'm sorry that someone was an ass! Seriously, that pisses me off. Yeah, if I lived in Boston or something, I might go. But the nearest one to me is over three hours away and I am moving in two or three weeks.

We all have lives and, as much as we support political/social causes (no matter how urgent and worthy), we need to take care of ourselves or we will be of no use. I wish I could do more (and I'm sure that you wish you could, too), but we can't. That does not make either of us bad people!!

I know. Of course, I'm still mad at Wright state's Lambda Union for turning a candlelight vigil for Matthew Shepherd into a political protest. It was tacky and made them seem like a liberal version of Phred Felps.

If that was directed at me, please don't misquote me indirectly. What I said was:

"I wonder how many of us will sit home this Saturday.

Really, none of us has any excuse to do so. If one has to work or is encumbered with other responsibilities, for whatever reason, I understand that; some personal needs cannot be excused."

Which would neatly put you out of the running.

If you read the rest of it, you'll see that the reason I feel the need to protest is to keep other rights from being stripped from us. If it can happen once, it can happen again.

If this wasn't directed at me, I apologize for my presumption.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled rant.

It was technically only partially directed at you, There are others taking a more hardcore stand on the issue.

Basically, this entire rant was inspired by opening my friends page to find 7 or 8 postings of the damn Keith Olberman video in a row. Which is annoying.

That is because Olberman (and similar ilk, i.e., O'Reilly) are annoying bums to begin with.

When people could get news w/o news reporters so reporters are now left to entertain.

You lump us all into the same crowd, I may have to put the Smackdown! on ya.

TV reporters are all about ratings and looking good, which is why Cathy Stelzer and her ilk wear 10 pounds of pancake makeup (which is very scary off camera up close). The last bastion of true journalism is print, and even we are under attack because advertising revenue is shrinking so fast.

Well, given the local down here is all about printing letters that are from the extreme left or extreme right just to get people to hit the website...

I mean, the local coverage is ok, but the editorial page is a bit like having Fox News on the TV and air America on the radio at the same time.

Oh, no, James, I understand that people do have lives that were planned way before this was, and there are people with plans that they cannot control. Mine was aimed more at people who can do something, and elect to do nothing. That type of laziness bothers me, because too often they're the same people who'll complain the next time sopmething happens to curtail our rights.

As for the Olbermann video, I understand; when I posted it it was brand new, and I had no idea it'd start a deluge among MY friends. It's their right to post it, but it IS getting old. That type of overexposure dilutes the message.

Don't watch them, then. I got really really annoyed by all the hate earlier that I'd been reading... I stopped reading them. I'm sorry, I like what he said, as well as what Rachel Maddow said. We have one of these protests in Columbus on Saturday, I can't make it. It's my first weekend home in a while. If you don't like my suggestion, fine, but it's my journal I'm posting it on and like I've said to everyone - it's your journal, post what you want. It's my journal and if I wish to post it, I will.

Date: 2008-11-11 07:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gangrel-pri.livejournal.com
Urf? Did I post in your journal complaining about it being the 10th post IN A ROW with just that video?

It's your right to post what you want in your journal, as long as it conforms to the legal shit LJ requires. If you want to post the video that's fine.

I just happen to be sick of seeing it pop up like a bad game of Whack-A-Mole on my friends page.

And yes, there's a lot of hating going around right now. On pretty much every side of the political continuum. Mainly since EVERYONE (myself included) has decided that if not everyone agrees with us, they must be evil.

I'm sick of it. I'm sick of reading the paper every morning and seeing letters either complaining about someone who hasn't even taken office yet or letters from the opposite side referring to the other letter writers as drooling mouth breathers unworthy of being considered human.

And I'll be honest and admit I don't like Keith very much. He pissed me off when he hosted SportsCenter on ESPN, and my opinion hasn't improved since then.

No, you didn't post in mine. You just said you were going to stick your foot up someone's butt and I'd rather that not happen. I never watched him when he was a sports whatever, I don't like sports. I like his cynicism, I pretty much like most of MSNBC's nightly line-up.
I've stopped reading the hate. It's always going to be there as long as people want something to hate. It's stupid, retarded and so forth, but I'm keeping my peace by not watching/reading/listening to it anymore. If it's posted as a comment to anything I post... that's what the delete comment key is for. If someone gets pissy about it, too bad, it's my journal... they have every right to delete my comments on theirs.
I've also said that I'm not going to the protest. I'm going to enjoy my day off, watch West Wing, clean the kitchen, get my pussy (just had to say it - my cat Floyd) shaved and eat yummy dinner. That's my way of saying that if people are telling you that you're not whatever for not going, tell them to shove it.
I'm tired and very short and bitchy today.
I'd love for the hate to go away, but I can only deal w/ how I feel and act/react. I can't get them to stop hating, but I can stop paying attention to it. I guess I'm fortunate that most of my LJ friends never post anything but on a rare occasion. They never comment, either, which can be good and bad.
Post whatever complaint you want, but don't kick me in the butt 'cause I posted what I wanted, too.
