I hate to say this...
Nov. 11th, 2008 11:39 amBut if I see Keith Olberman's commentary posted one more time today, I'm going to shove my foot up someone's ass.
I'll also refer you to
nihilistic_kid's post on the subject.
While I realize it's nice for a MSNBC broadcaster to come out for gay marriage, he, like protesters on Saturday, will be largely ignored by the mainstream and condemned by the social conservatives.
And since someone on my friends list felt free to condemn anyone who won't be attending a protest on Saturday...
I have to work. Getting bent out of shape about something that happened in California doesn't pay the bills, doesn't put food on the table, and sure as hell doesn't get me any closer to being involved with someone who I'd actually be tempted to use the right Prop 8 took away.
While I agree that I think California was wrong in voting in Prop 8, I think that religious institutions should not have been pouring money into the campaign to pass it, this is also an issue CA is going to have to work out with itself. Particularly considering how many states currently have Amendments banning same-sex marriage amd the federal DOMA law. If you want to protest something, try those. They affect us much more than an injustice in CA.
Also, as has been pointed out previously, CA still has domestic partnerships, which while not enough, are still a damn sight better than what most of us mid-westerners qualify for.

Date: 2008-11-11 06:46 pm (UTC)I'm sorry that someone was an ass! Seriously, that pisses me off. Yeah, if I lived in Boston or something, I might go. But the nearest one to me is over three hours away and I am moving in two or three weeks.
We all have lives and, as much as we support political/social causes (no matter how urgent and worthy), we need to take care of ourselves or we will be of no use. I wish I could do more (and I'm sure that you wish you could, too), but we can't. That does not make either of us bad people!!

Date: 2008-11-11 06:51 pm (UTC)"I wonder how many of us will sit home this Saturday.
Really, none of us has any excuse to do so. If one has to work or is encumbered with other responsibilities, for whatever reason, I understand that; some personal needs cannot be excused."
Which would neatly put you out of the running.
If you read the rest of it, you'll see that the reason I feel the need to protest is to keep other rights from being stripped from us. If it can happen once, it can happen again.
If this wasn't directed at me, I apologize for my presumption.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled rant.

Date: 2008-11-11 07:24 pm (UTC)Basically, this entire rant was inspired by opening my friends page to find 7 or 8 postings of the damn Keith Olberman video in a row. Which is annoying.

Date: 2008-11-12 04:52 am (UTC)TV reporters are all about ratings and looking good, which is why Cathy Stelzer and her ilk wear 10 pounds of pancake makeup (which is very scary off camera up close). The last bastion of true journalism is print, and even we are under attack because advertising revenue is shrinking so fast.

Date: 2008-11-12 07:10 am (UTC)I mean, the local coverage is ok, but the editorial page is a bit like having Fox News on the TV and air America on the radio at the same time.

Date: 2008-11-11 09:14 pm (UTC)As for the Olbermann video, I understand; when I posted it it was brand new, and I had no idea it'd start a deluge among MY friends. It's their right to post it, but it IS getting old. That type of overexposure dilutes the message.

I just happen to be sick of seeing it pop up like a bad game of Whack-A-Mole on my friends page.
And yes, there's a lot of hating going around right now. On pretty much every side of the political continuum. Mainly since EVERYONE (myself included) has decided that if not everyone agrees with us, they must be evil.
I'm sick of it. I'm sick of reading the paper every morning and seeing letters either complaining about someone who hasn't even taken office yet or letters from the opposite side referring to the other letter writers as drooling mouth breathers unworthy of being considered human.
And I'll be honest and admit I don't like Keith very much. He pissed me off when he hosted SportsCenter on ESPN, and my opinion hasn't improved since then.

Date: 2008-11-11 08:19 pm (UTC)I've stopped reading the hate. It's always going to be there as long as people want something to hate. It's stupid, retarded and so forth, but I'm keeping my peace by not watching/reading/listening to it anymore. If it's posted as a comment to anything I post... that's what the delete comment key is for. If someone gets pissy about it, too bad, it's my journal... they have every right to delete my comments on theirs.
I've also said that I'm not going to the protest. I'm going to enjoy my day off, watch West Wing, clean the kitchen, get my pussy (just had to say it - my cat Floyd) shaved and eat yummy dinner. That's my way of saying that if people are telling you that you're not whatever for not going, tell them to shove it.
I'm tired and very short and bitchy today.
I'd love for the hate to go away, but I can only deal w/ how I feel and act/react. I can't get them to stop hating, but I can stop paying attention to it. I guess I'm fortunate that most of my LJ friends never post anything but on a rare occasion. They never comment, either, which can be good and bad.
Post whatever complaint you want, but don't kick me in the butt 'cause I posted what I wanted, too.
