Running AdAware right now, but I keep getting an anti-virus popup that wants me to install an Active-X control. My pop up blocker isn't blocking it, so I'm unsure of how to get rid of it.

EDIT: Oddly enough, Firefox doesn't seem to be doing it. I think I just decided to get rid of IE.

Thank you. It's currently uploading difinitions.

I technically have McAfee on my puter, but it mostly just pops up a window to annoy moe more than anything else.

I recommend you just dump McAfee... it's a giant blowhard memory hog that does not work very well, and is very very intrusive. Go and get AVG like a real man! ^_~ Seriously. it's way better... and does what McAfee and AdAware (don't) do all by itself.

OH.... Did I mention it's free? And one of Kim Komando's (computer guru) top picks for several years now?

AVG and Zone Alarm....two excellent programs that are, as Ishte pointed out, FREE!

Indeed....sometimes free is a good thing!

I hated McAfee, even though it came with my puter. Major issue I had was the fire wall was convinced any MMORPG was naughty, bad evil.

That's why I recommend getting rid of it and using AVG. It's much smaller faster and more efficient. Catches more real problems and plays nicer with our toys. McAfee is as bad and cumbersome as Norton AV now.

Use AVG http://free.avg.com

AVG 8 comes with a spyware scanner too... so you don't have to use Adaware (which barely works any more) or Spybot (which also barely works any more unless you pay for it)

question..
with the post and your comment..
what happens if u try to run the scan and it won't because active-x needs to be installed?

basically, it's an ad. Which is why I won't let it run active X.

Spybot. I forgot about that one. Went with AdAware at the time because its the one I could remember the name of:)

I wasn't planning on it. I recognized it as problematic just based on the number of panic inducers attached to the ad/

Definitely dump IE. Firefox is far superior.

Still getting used to firefox. I realize the current IE is designed to mimic it, but...
